FFL transfers on Long Island: Nassau and Suffolk

Long Island sits between two sets of rules. You are in New York State, so the state's limits apply, and both Nassau and Suffolk add licensing steps of their own. Buying online works fine here - it just pays to know the order of operations before you spend money.

Nassau and Suffolk issue their own pistol licences

Handgun licences come from the county police department, not from Albany and not from the NYPD. Each county runs its own timeline, its own interview and its own list of documents. A licence issued in one county is recognised elsewhere in the state outside the city, but the purchase itself usually has to be added to your licence before a dealer can release the pistol to you. Plan for that step: it is the single most common reason a handgun sits in a dealer's safe for weeks.

Long guns

Rifles and shotguns do not need a county licence out here. You order, the firearm ships to a licensed dealer, you fill in the federal form, and the background check is usually done while you wait. What matters is configuration: the state limits certain semi-automatic rifle features and magazine capacity, and those limits apply in both counties. We check that before anything ships.

Choosing a receiving dealer

There are more transfer-friendly shops per mile on the Island than almost anywhere else in the state, and fees are competitive - commonly $25 to $60. Call ahead, ask two questions: do you accept transfers, and what is the fee. Then put their name and address in the FFL box at checkout. No dealer in mind? Timing

Orders leave in one to two business days. Ground shipping into Nassau or Suffolk is normally two to four. Add a day or two for the dealer to log it in and call you.
