I had that very same rifle, on the outside, it appeared to have a good quality, but the truth is in the pudding.

I’ve had many rifles through the years, I consider myself a decent shooter, but with this rifle, I never got the rifle to shoot better than 2 MOA. I mean you are talking load development, bedding, proper breaking, cleaning, no cleaning.

It was no hope.

In my opinion, I think law enforcing agencies are not concerned with making small groups, they want the heavy hitting energy, besides at the ranges they use the rifle, you’ll get the bad guy even if you just grace the skin.

So if you are planning to shoot far with it, spend a little more money and build your rifle, or buy it from a reputable source.

Rem 700 XCR, .338 Lapua – with muzzle brake

Been looking around for a "real" long-range rifle for some time, one that would outperform my Barrett M82A1 on long-range shoots against the rocks south of Hurricane. No doubt you can spend lots of $$ on various rifles chambered for .338 Lapua – but the Remington 700 in XCR config with synthetic stock, fluted barrel, AND a muzzle brake has to be the best value. I didn’t think they could cram the long, fat Lapua round into the Remington, but it fits nicely with a detachable, single-stack 5rd magazine. The bolt face is opened up about as much as possible, and fitted with a Sako-type extractor. Got it right off the wall from Impact.

As for shooting: I thought it would be a beast, but with the brake, it’s amazingly tame. Less recoil than my .338 RCM, about on a par with a .30-06 and 180gr loads. I’m impressed with the muzzle brake, and the shooters on the benches either side of me (with a heads-up), say the jet blast is "not too bad". No failures to fire, feed or eject, with about 290 rounds downrange so far.

As for accuracy, it outshoots the Barrett hands down at the rock face at 1010yds, I can smack a bush about as big as a bushel basket all day long. Paired with a Leupold VX-6, 4-24X and a varmint reticle, (also from Impact) it’s a sweet setup.

If you reload, it’ll cost you about a buck a round, which is halfway reasonable these days. It likes Nosler 200gr, Hornady 200 and 225gr, but the 250 grainers not so much. Half the fun is load development, trying to squeeze the best accuracy out of it. Best so far: 0.6MOA at the 200yd range in Bountiful with a near-max charge of Accurate MagPro.

I love this rifle.shoots great,lots of recoil .Ial be putting on a fat bastard muzzle brake to tame it a little.

Extractor problems

Have two and friend has one. Of the three rifles two have had broken extractors. Remington is aware of the problem but says for now to just buy a new extractor. $50 each. Other than very short barrel life and extractor problems they are alright. Better mount a real good scope on it as recoil is stout. Nightforce NXS series works fine.
